  • 2 and 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup softened butter
  • 2 teaspoons ground cardamom

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

For the Topping:

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

For the Dough:

  1. 1. Warm the milk until slightly hot (not boiling). Sprinkle in the yeast and sugar, letting it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. 2. Add melted butter, ground cardamom, and flour one cup at a time until a soft dough forms.
  3. 3. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  4. 4. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

For the Filling:

  1. 5. Roll out the risen dough into a rectangle.
  2. 6. Spread softened butter over the dough. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle generously over the top.

For Shaping:

  1. 7. Roll up tightly from one end to another and cut into pieces about two inches thick; place cut side up in a greased baking dish.

For Baking:

  1. 8. Brush with an egg wash (egg mixed with water) for a golden finish.
